Do gore-tex hiking boots expand when you break them in?
In two weeks I will be going on a hiking trip with my friends for three weeks in the Himalayas. I have to admit, I’m not exactly an expert hiker so a couple weeks ago, I went over to Timberland and bought some water-proof gore- tex hiking boots (about $ 100). Now I’m suddenly having doubts about the size because I was notified that it was essential you break in your boots by wearing them around the house. At the store I found the length to be perfect so I (in a hurry) just bought them and went. Now, as I walk around the house I can feel that there is about one half a centimeter left for length so its all good. But, I have really wide feet so I feel the width is about tight. My friend says that it isn’t possible to stretch out gore-tex by breaking it in so wearing it for a while won’t help increase the width. I have big feet (size 9) and the size above is too long for me so I would probably get blisters after rubbing against them for a long time. But this size is too tight around the width. What should I do? Will gore-tex material expand? (I need a waterproof material, not leather or cloth) Answers will be appreciated!

First of all, right on to spending three weeks in the Himalayas! Can I come too?
They are not going to expand by wearing them. You should take them back to Timberland. This is a totally common problem and Timberland will for sure let you exchange them for another style that will fit better. If they don’t have anything that works for you try to get your money back and go to a store that carries multiple brands like Vasque and Asolo. REI or Cabelas would be a good place to start. You may also want to consider a more serious hiking boot that has leather (outside)/gore-tex (inside) uppers and vibram soles. Leather is more durable material than gore-tex for boots and will be waterproof when you buy them. After a few solid years of use you can Sno-seal them to restore their waterproof.
btw, really good pairs of boots need little breaking in. I have had several pairs of Asolo boots (~$ 200) that virtually needed zero breaking in before long treks.

Wearing your boots around the house isnt to break the boots in so much as it is to break your feet into the boots. If you are doing a lot of strenuous hiking in two weeks, you had better be sure your feet will not blister in your new boots.
The himalayas sound cold. Will you be wearing two pairs of socks, or just one thick one? Be sure you are trying them out with hiking socks.
I just went boot shopping with a female friend of mine with wide feet who liked the Vasque Breeze boot. It is Gore Tex, and a solid boot.
Are you going to be hiking on snow and ice? How cold will it be? You may want to look into an insulated hiker.

Yes Gor-tex boots will stretch. I know this because I used to issue them out to army personnel in Canada and we were trained to know so we could explain it to the soldiers who also questioned how they fit.

They don’t have to be. Gor-Tex is a breathable, water resistant material. It can be used in an insulated or non-insulated boot. Check whether the boot in question is insulated. In other words, whether or not it has Gor-Tex is irrelevant to how “hot” it will be. Insulated boots will say something along the lines of, “200 grams of Thinsulate”, listing the insulating properties (heat retention).

Nope, I have a pair of Merrell boots with Gore tex and I wear them all day and they are not hot. Oh by the way it is only suppose to be 102 degrees today in Arizona.

Vasque is the boot that “allows you to slip them on and go,” and requires very little break in time.

Philmont is a tough! While many modern hiking boots require very little or no break in time, you should try to get 1 or 2 good hikes along some tougher terrain to find out if you’ve got any pressure points or rubbing in the boot. Walking around town isn’t the same as walking along an uneven, rocky trail.
If the boot rubs a bit or feels too tight, it’s better to make adjustments now. A little moleskin or a different lacing pattern can solve many problems …. but figure out what you need before you find yourself 5 miles into a 50 mile trek.

If it is a Vasque boot that is largely made from mesh and suede leather, they should break in very quickly. All leather models such as the Sundowner take some more time.
A good sign your boot is broken in will be if there is a slight curve in the sole. Good flexibility in the area betwen the toe and the arch is also a good sign the boots are broken in. Lastly, if they feel comfortable and they do not give you blisters, then they are most likely ready to go.
3 days is usually enough to break-in a pair of lightweight boots, but an all-leather boot will take some time. If they are all leather, 25-35 miles of walking or hiking will usually do it.
Put some more time into the boots in any event. Better to be safe than sorry. Have Phun at Philmont!

If you’re actually going to be out in the woods for extended periods in rain or snow, then definitely go with the gore-tex. If you’re just wearing them around town you don’t really need the gore-tex. however, if you have a foot-odor problem the gore-tex is the way to go even if just wearing around town. it breathes better.

Water Proof Gore-tex Boots?
I am preparing to go on a hiking expedition in the mountains of New Mexico at Philmont Scout Ranch. Today i bought a nice pair of boots and they say gore-tex on them, i know what gore-tex is i know its water proof. however they are not all the same material on the outside of the boot. and not all the parts say gore-tex, just the leather looking one, the rest is a breathable mesh material. i was wondering if i should spray these boots with a waterproof spray to protect the whole of the boot, yet i don’t want to cancel out the gore-tex. please let me know if i’m doing something worng. so the basic question is; should i spray my Gore-tex boots with water proof spray?

You can still spray a waterproofing silicone spray like Camp-Dri without affecting the Gore-Tex. It will still breathe out water vapor.

gore-tex is a type of fabric that is water proof and breath-able, meaning the weave is tight enough to stop water from passing through but air and persperation (in vapor form) can escape. in order for the boot to be water proof the fabric has to cover the entire top of the foot and be sealed to the rubber sole. in order to do this manfactures usually make the interiour liner of the boot out of gore-tex, not the outside. the water proof spray won’t hurt the gore-tex, but may help to protect the leather.

I had a pair of Bates zip-up boots.I never needed to put any kind of waterproofing stuff on them. Kept my feet dry as long as I didn’t get to deep. If they have leather on the outside of the boot use Lincoln shoe polish. But you should read the label man.

please send recommendation that have been tried and tested….I have very large calves – used to get teased when I was a kid with accusations that I played soccer in my sleep! Go for knee length boots and avoid mid-calf boots. Get something with mixture of stretchable materials or lace up so you can adjust to your calves accordingly.

Have you taken the Dublins to a shoe repair shop? Perhaps they can re-sole the bottoms for you. Or, go into a mens or boys boots as they have a wider construction.
Constant use with leather boots will usually allow them to conform to your feet. It’s great when a pair of boots get broken in and fit like a glove. I have two pairs of Ariats and one pair is heavier leather and feel like lead weights on my feet. I find them to be a little on the skimpy side but the others are better. It’s a matter of finding the right style too. My fav’s are my Black Mountain or Black Horse..they seem to be made wider and lighter. I also have to have wide boots because I have wide feet. I have ariats. For paddock boots, i normally have to buy mens because they naturally run wider. Try going to a local tack shop and trying on some different boots. Good luck!

You mean change the color? You really can’t change the color if it’s already black. If they are old and worn you might be able to turn in into a very dark brown by using brow shoe polish a lot.

Yes, Chet does look rather young for his age. He was a high school teacher though.
Several times at the Lodge, when Chet and Susann were visiting us, one of our paying bear hunters innocently asked Susann what grade in school that Chet was in. The just couldn’t figure him out at first.
I can’t say that that kind of thing made me feel bad for Chet and Susann, or that it was of any humorous value to me. I was rather neutral about it. As I was about Chet and Susann. I did not particularly care for their company, but I did enjoy it a bit–now and then. I can’t remember any outstandingly great or hilarious times we had together, but then they never actually rubbed me the wrong way at any time either.
But I do have to admit that I got a bit of a kick out of hearing how the boys at Chet’s school, Katahdin High School, had once ‘borrowed’ somebody’s goat one night and tied it to Chet and Susann’s front porch. Any guy who looked like Chet, well, he was a nice guy at heart, but that don’t matter to some of the kinds of rugged outdoorsman type of kids who were in an abundance at Katahdin High. Chet was just a natural target for their favorite brand of high jinx.
My Uncle Finley, Aunt Martha, and I all enjoyed going out snowshoeing. It is great exercise.
When walking on snowshoes, you always wear at least one less outer layer of warm clothing than you usually wear; or else you will become overheated and begin to perspire profusely. You usually take off the heavy coat you normally have to wear outside during cold weather. If you do wear too much warm clothing, when snowshoeing, you will not walk very far before you will become very uncomfortable, and you’re inner most layers of clothing will become soaked with sweat. Then if you take your outer coat off, you will be chilled to the bone, in-no-time-flat, by your freezing sweat.
Snowshoes can break. Accidents can happen. And a personal health problem or emergency may arise at the worst time, like at the beginning of a snowstorm in the farthest place you have ever snowshoed to. So be as prepared as you reasonably can, for such problems.
Whenever you are out in the woods, no matter what you are doing, always carry two different, reliable fire sources. Like waterproof matches and a fully filled windproof lighter. And stow them in two different places, in two different layers of clothing, or one fire source in a clothing pocket, and one in a backpack pocket.
When you are either working or having fun, or in many cases having fun at working, in the Great Outdoors, you either follow the rules that experienced outdoors enthusiasts tell you about, or you will eventually suffer the harsh consequences.
So listen to and heed any safety info or instructions that your experienced, professionally qualified ski instructor, scout leader, salesperson in an outdoors outfitter store, Maine Guide, author, etc. offers or gives to you.
For many of us, nothing is much better than a good day in the Great Outdoors.
For all of us, nothing is much worse than being the victim of a preventable, tragic situation in the Great Outdoors.
When you are out in the Great Outdoors, please heed the advice and unbendable rules of outdoors experts–the more local to where you are going into the outdoors that the experts are from, the more reliable their information and advice should be.
For example: there are no ticks, chiggers, or poisonous snakes in the area of Northern Maine where I was granted a Maine Guide’s License. But there are black flies, mosquitoes, and midges–no see ‘ums, and some, potentially, mighty mean momma moosies.
For our personal protection during summer insect seasons, we Katahdin Lodge hunting guides usually: wore long sleeve shirts–yes, it was in the early summertime; with insect repellent smeared onto our hands and on up our wrists to our lower forearms; we put insect repellent all over our faces, ears, and necks; we even doused some onto the lower part of the sweat bands in our hats; we bloused our work boots, military style, with big rubber bands holding the bottoms of our pants tightly against our boot tops, so that no insects could crawl up our legs.
The most dangerous animal in the woods around Patten Maine is a cow moose with a calf at her side. If you get too close to a cow with a calf, momma moose will defend her calf with some extremely deft and powerful forward kicks of her very hard front hoofs against your much softer body.
I know a little something about protecting one’s self from ticks, but not enough to give advice on it. I know nothing about chiggers. I know very little about avoiding poisonous snakes, when hiking, hunting, fishing, camping, etc. in areas with substantial populations of poisonous snakes.
I have hiked and fished in areas with very low numbered poisonous snake populations. I keep my eyes open and constantly look for them. I usually take along a hiking stick to thump on the ground at every step, in hopes that the vibrations from that will travel along the ground and warn any snakes that I’m coming. That trick may not work, but I’ll do it till I’m told by an expert on snakes that it doesn’t.
I will do some serious research before I ever travel to any geographical areas where there are a lot of poisonous snakes. And when I get there, I will ask questions of knowledgeable authorities and request the right reading material.
In the early 1950s, my Uncle Finley, and my father used to be in the Army Reserves together. They went together to Army Reserve summer training at Ft. Knox Ky. a few times. They later told the family about using clear fingernail polish on their legs to keep the chiggers from digging in under their skin. That’s all I know about chiggers, so if I ever go to where the chiggers are a serious problem, I’ll find out what to do to prevent them from bothering me. That nail polish trick may be or may not be a good idea, but I know to find out from modern experts before I try it.

I bought a pair on eBay, and I thought the size was OK, but they were made funny. I have a rather wide foot, and I could not get my foot into them. My daughter, and my daughter-in-law, both wear the same size I do, except my daughter-in-law has a very narrow foot. Neither of them could get the boot on their foot either. It was a slip-on with a zipper, not ties. I would definitely recommend not buying them on line, but try them on in the store first. I thought I was saving a lot of money, but actually ended up with a very costly pair of boots that nobody can wear.

Depuis 2 ou 3 mois je me ballade les pas dans ces bottes que je considère intergalactiques. Des bottes d’hiver que j’ai acheté contre l’avis de mon homme qui ne les aimait pas du tout. Il les trouvait définitivement « trop bizarres » à son goût. Mais comme son goût n’est pas le mien et qu’à mon goût elles étaient trop cool, contre son gré, je les ai embarquées.
- Ben, tu vois pas que c’est comme des bottes de l’espace!Cela va être mes bottes intergalactiques pour passer au travers de l’hiver!

Il m’a fait une petite moue. Je suis repartie toute contente de mes bottes sidérales. Au fil des semaines qui passent, je réalise que ces bottes sont bien fraîches, elles n’ont définitivement pas l’isolation de mes bottes de Yeti! Mais mes bottes de Yeti défraichies, en ville, c’est pas hyper chic! Et puis j’aime bien le petit look intergalactique que celles-ci trimballent! Alors j’accepte de me geler les pieds et je garde mes « Yétis » pour mes sorties de village ou d’hôtel de glace!
Au fil des semaines qui s’effacent, je m’attache à ces bottes de l’espace ultra confortable. Elle ne tiennent pas chaud (ce qui en mes latitudes est un léger problème, cela dit j’étais de ces ados qui se baladent le derrière en mini jupe par moins 20 alors je peux tout à fait survivre à cet inconfort temporaire) mais elles tiennent bien le pied, c’est pratique pour la marche. D’ailleurs lorsque nous sommes allés au Biodôme durant les fêtes de fin d’année, elles m’ont tenu bien au chaud dans la jungle tropicale! Ce jour là, elles m’ont fait bien suer! Je les sais originales, à la frontière du kitch mais elles me plaisent, elles me divertissent le quotidien. En plus elles sont d’un entretien des plus faciles! Je m’en amuse en interpelant mes amis :
- Hé, t’as vu mes nouvelles bottes intergalactiques?!?
- Hum, j’ai vu! Elles sont tout à fait toi!!!

not sure where you can get them but my sister took her boots to a tailor and had them widened and the heel reshaped, maybe you could try that.

Place to find cheap cowboy boots?
I got a pair of red cowboy boots when I lived in TX and my friend was trying to find a similar pair. I know that they’re an expensive type of shoe if you want them made right but are there any stores or websites that sell them cheaper than a place like Justin’s that sells $ 300 boots? I’d like to help him out so if they were men’s boots it would also great, not to mention if they come in red that’s even better.
