O.K. I ride a bike, and for many years all weather excluding fog. One of the best boots ive ever found are German fire department boots (Feuerwehr steifel) They are not however knee length they are a little longer than engineers boots so calf long. I ride now with a 6 year old pair they are still waterproof. I treated them once when new with mink oil, ive never had wetness problems since.
Good luck in your search for knee high boots though. For me, my opinion struggling in and out of such things would strongly discourage me from wearing them other than in extreme weather conditions that warranted them. Note also steel toecaps on a bike make your toes extremely cold (when relative conditions cold enough) So it may be a good point to exclude any boots you find with steel caps from your search German fire boots have toecaps but they are temperature resistant ie the caps are high melt plastic You should be able to find them easily enough by typing feuerwehr steifel into E bay Germany then you can translate the side to English using e bay settings

Since you mentioned Sidi or Alpinestar boots you have a idea of what you are looking for. I picked up some Sidi boots last Spring…one of the selling points was in the costumer reviews, “I wear them every time I get my motorbike out” I now do the same. My thought was if I spend that much on the boot why not go all out and spend $ 28 more for the ceramic guards. I’ve only slightly hit a toe once in recovering the bike from an error but shure was glad the ceramic tips where between me and the pavement . Dressed for the worst! One thing that took me by surprise is how much more the shifter pad gave my foot so much more feedback over anything else I’ve ever worn. I have worn them threw sheets of freezing rain down a mountain in fading evening light (got caught) I was so dripping wet I never noticed my wet feet!

And… Yes! I wear them every time I ride!

I would get regular street boots if I were you. Not only will they last longer, but they are alot more comfortable for street riding. That is why they have “race boots”. For racing. A street boot will give you just as much support, but be better gripwise and comfort wise on the street. I have had excellent luck from the Milwaukee boots I have purchased. I put about 300 miles a week on my bike, about half in city traffic. My boots last almost two years before they have to be re-soled. And they are better in the rain than race boots. (At least the old ones. Ain’t had a set of race boots for about 20 years!) I have an old pair of toe-cap Milwaukee’s that are about eight years old, and still going strong. Your boots will last longer also, if you have two pair and rotate them every day. Don’t get both pair at one time though! Your feet will hate you for making them break in two new pairs of boots! Just some additional info. I live in Florida and do not own a car. That’s how I get 300 miles or so a week. We get rain, heavy rain. I can put my feet down on just about anything with the Milwaukee’s and get a grip. And they just shrug off the rain. I have not had a pair get hard and crack on me.

I understand your question, and no, you’ll be hard-pressed to find sliders in a Dennis Kirk mag, because it would be advocating a dangerous activity on a motorcycle.

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t do it… I’ve done it plenty of times… but it’s been a while since I knew of a place where you could buy them.

You could do what I sometimes do: make them. All you need are two pieces of steel, a drill, and straps. You’ll need the steel to conform to the sole of your boot…but this isn’t hard to do if you know anything about manipulating metal. Worst case scenario: get a thinner plate of steel, or possibly some thick aluminum.

Side note: after about 10 seconds of sparks, the soles of your boots will be close to melting… and if they’re thin enough, could possibly fuse the plastic of the boot to the bottom of your foot. I know of one person who wrecked because the bottoms of his feet were burning, and he couldn’t get his boot back into the gear-shifting position before he ran off the road.

Just be careful if you plan on doing any kind of stunting. You’re almost certainly going to get hurt eventually. We all do.

ok, so a bit more info about my hike up to huayna potosi – the 6k mountain that i climbed last week. it was a two day trek, the first consisting of a couple of hours walk from basecamp to highcamp and the second from highcamp to the summit. we were told that one in five people don’t actually make it to the summit, be that because of a reaction to the altitude or just tiredness. i was knackered from the two hour walk on day one, in fact just walking to and from the outside toilet left me out of breath, so i was fairly apprehensive for what was to come. we awoke on day two just after midnight. we were lucky that there was very little wind, although the temperatures were still unsurprisingly freezing. i wore three tshirts, two jumpers, two jackets in addition to mountaineering attire like helmet and crampons. we were then roped to the guide and a partner and set off on the long, long walk. the aim was to get to the top for sunrise, although for me the main aim was just to get to the top. i couldn’t really say much for the subsequent five hours, i just concentrated on shuffling my feet forward and trying to inhale as much oxygen as the mountainscape would let me. the terrain itself wasn’t particularly difficult, it was all snow which was soft enough so that the crampons would sink in but tough enough to feel like solid ground. there was one occasion where we had to use our pickaxes to climb up an ice wall, and a few narrow sections with fairly substantial falls either side. the most scary of which was the ridge at the very end, which was only about a foot in width. not only was this where we were most tired, and most lacking in oxygen, but it was also the point where my crampon decided to leap off my boot. it all eventually added to the experience, and we made it to the summit to witness the sun climb above the sea of clouds and a new day being born.

I think they run big. My step daughter got a pair of her riding boots and the size she got was a bit big, but she kept them anyway. They were not huge on her, but they didn’t fit perfect either. The size smaller was too tight so she stuck with her original size even though they were a bit loose.

Do gore-tex hiking boots expand when you break them in?
In two weeks I will be going on a hiking trip with my friends for three weeks in the Himalayas. I have to admit, I’m not exactly an expert hiker so a couple weeks ago, I went over to Timberland and bought some water-proof gore- tex hiking boots (about $ 100). Now I’m suddenly having doubts about the size because I was notified that it was essential you break in your boots by wearing them around the house. At the store I found the length to be perfect so I (in a hurry) just bought them and went. Now, as I walk around the house I can feel that there is about one half a centimeter left for length so its all good. But, I have really wide feet so I feel the width is about tight. My friend says that it isn’t possible to stretch out gore-tex by breaking it in so wearing it for a while won’t help increase the width. I have big feet (size 9) and the size above is too long for me so I would probably get blisters after rubbing against them for a long time. But this size is too tight around the width. What should I do? Will gore-tex material expand? (I need a waterproof material, not leather or cloth) Answers will be appreciated!

First of all, right on to spending three weeks in the Himalayas! Can I come too?

They are not going to expand by wearing them. You should take them back to Timberland. This is a totally common problem and Timberland will for sure let you exchange them for another style that will fit better. If they don’t have anything that works for you try to get your money back and go to a store that carries multiple brands like Vasque and Asolo. REI or Cabelas would be a good place to start. You may also want to consider a more serious hiking boot that has leather (outside)/gore-tex (inside) uppers and vibram soles. Leather is more durable material than gore-tex for boots and will be waterproof when you buy them. After a few solid years of use you can Sno-seal them to restore their waterproof.

btw, really good pairs of boots need little breaking in. I have had several pairs of Asolo boots (~$ 200) that virtually needed zero breaking in before long treks.

Wearing your boots around the house isnt to break the boots in so much as it is to break your feet into the boots. If you are doing a lot of strenuous hiking in two weeks, you had better be sure your feet will not blister in your new boots.

The himalayas sound cold. Will you be wearing two pairs of socks, or just one thick one? Be sure you are trying them out with hiking socks.

I just went boot shopping with a female friend of mine with wide feet who liked the Vasque Breeze boot. It is Gore Tex, and a solid boot.

Are you going to be hiking on snow and ice? How cold will it be? You may want to look into an insulated hiker.

Yes Gor-tex boots will stretch. I know this because I used to issue them out to army personnel in Canada and we were trained to know so we could explain it to the soldiers who also questioned how they fit.

They don’t have to be. Gor-Tex is a breathable, water resistant material. It can be used in an insulated or non-insulated boot. Check whether the boot in question is insulated. In other words, whether or not it has Gor-Tex is irrelevant to how “hot” it will be. Insulated boots will say something along the lines of, “200 grams of Thinsulate”, listing the insulating properties (heat retention).

Nope, I have a pair of Merrell boots with Gore tex and I wear them all day and they are not hot. Oh by the way it is only suppose to be 102 degrees today in Arizona.

Philmont is a tough! While many modern hiking boots require very little or no break in time, you should try to get 1 or 2 good hikes along some tougher terrain to find out if you’ve got any pressure points or rubbing in the boot. Walking around town isn’t the same as walking along an uneven, rocky trail.

If the boot rubs a bit or feels too tight, it’s better to make adjustments now. A little moleskin or a different lacing pattern can solve many problems …. but figure out what you need before you find yourself 5 miles into a 50 mile trek.

If it is a Vasque boot that is largely made from mesh and suede leather, they should break in very quickly. All leather models such as the Sundowner take some more time.

A good sign your boot is broken in will be if there is a slight curve in the sole. Good flexibility in the area betwen the toe and the arch is also a good sign the boots are broken in. Lastly, if they feel comfortable and they do not give you blisters, then they are most likely ready to go.

3 days is usually enough to break-in a pair of lightweight boots, but an all-leather boot will take some time. If they are all leather, 25-35 miles of walking or hiking will usually do it.

Put some more time into the boots in any event. Better to be safe than sorry. Have Phun at Philmont!

If you’re actually going to be out in the woods for extended periods in rain or snow, then definitely go with the gore-tex. If you’re just wearing them around town you don’t really need the gore-tex. however, if you have a foot-odor problem the gore-tex is the way to go even if just wearing around town. it breathes better.

I am preparing to go on a hiking expedition in the mountains of New Mexico at Philmont Scout Ranch. Today i bought a nice pair of boots and they say gore-tex on them, i know what gore-tex is i know its water proof. however they are not all the same material on the outside of the boot. and not all the parts say gore-tex, just the leather looking one, the rest is a breathable mesh material. i was wondering if i should spray these boots with a waterproof spray to protect the whole of the boot, yet i don’t want to cancel out the gore-tex. please let me know if i’m doing something worng. so the basic question is; should i spray my Gore-tex boots with water proof spray?

You can still spray a waterproofing silicone spray like Camp-Dri without affecting the Gore-Tex. It will still breathe out water vapor.

gore-tex is a type of fabric that is water proof and breath-able, meaning the weave is tight enough to stop water from passing through but air and persperation (in vapor form) can escape. in order for the boot to be water proof the fabric has to cover the entire top of the foot and be sealed to the rubber sole. in order to do this manfactures usually make the interiour liner of the boot out of gore-tex, not the outside. the water proof spray won’t hurt the gore-tex, but may help to protect the leather.

I had a pair of Bates zip-up boots.I never needed to put any kind of waterproofing stuff on them. Kept my feet dry as long as I didn’t get to deep. If they have leather on the outside of the boot use Lincoln shoe polish. But you should read the label man.

Have you taken the Dublins to a shoe repair shop? Perhaps they can re-sole the bottoms for you. Or, go into a mens or boys boots as they have a wider construction.

Constant use with leather boots will usually allow them to conform to your feet. It’s great when a pair of boots get broken in and fit like a glove. I have two pairs of Ariats and one pair is heavier leather and feel like lead weights on my feet. I find them to be a little on the skimpy side but the others are better. It’s a matter of finding the right style too. My fav’s are my Black Mountain or Black Horse..they seem to be made wider and lighter. Try to stay away from a pointy toe box so your toes won’t be so squished together.

Good luck finding a suitable pair or even repairing yours!!

I also have to have wide boots because I have wide feet. I have ariats. For paddock boots, i normally have to buy mens because they naturally run wider. Try going to a local tack shop and trying on some different boots. Good luck!
