I’ve just started riding and would like some long riding boots, Im not sure what make is best but I need a pair that are high quality and will last, any suggestions?

Ariat H2O boots. They come in insulated and non-insulated form and are incredible for pretty much all horse riding disciplines. I have a pair of non-insulated boots and though they cost quite a bit, it’s definitely worth it as they can last several decades when properly looked after. Because they last so long, money is actually saved because you don’t have to buy new boots!!

Boots with wide calves can be hard to find. Both my husband and I have had this problem over the years, lol. I ended up with custom boots made by Argentine Polo Store. He found a pair that fit his calves on an English Riding supply web site. For just practice/exercise, we use short boots (called paddock boots) with half chaps, made by Arete Equestrian.

The taller riding boots are called Tall Boots. You can get them with laces at the ankle (called Field Boots), or plain (called Dress Boots). You can also get Polo Boots, which are stylish, and Fox Hunting boots, which are most like what you see on the race track.

Generally, the foot part is sized just like shoes. The calf part comes in different widths from Extra Small to Extra Wide (sometimes XXW) – these vary by manufacturer, but they usually will give you a measurement in inches around the widest part of the calf. You can also get different heights from some manufacturers.

They run from around $ 100 and way up, depending on quality. Those less common sizes are usually more; custom boots are the most expensive.

That’s for English riding boots, or tall boots. I like the field boots as they’re easier to put on and take off; you can also get them with zippers up the back. For those of us with wide calves, some come with elastic insets in the tops to make putting them on easier. If you have an old pair, you can get a shoe repair guy to put a gusset in the back to widen the calf. That’s far and away the cheapest and looks quite good if the guy does it well.

Western riding boots work the same way, but you don’t need as much calf width as they’re shorter. Just make sure you get them with the riding heel, not the walking heel or the high heel!

I find that using ankle high nylon stockings and baby powder sprinkled in the boot and on my stockings help slip my boot off and on… they also hav epull pulls, if your boots have loop straps on the inside of them the boot hook tools will help pull them up or leg and on as well. stateline tack sells the pull hook, they look like hay hooks just smaller and not sharp haha

Just get boot pulls to get them on and a boot jack to get them off because you don’t need anyone to help you if you use those methods. Baby powder and thin knee high socks help make it easier. WD 40 would be too messy.

Types of horse riding boots â?” how to chose the right one

Horse riding boots are generally considered to be more of a fashion statement than a requirement in comparison with other horse riding apparel. However, traditional horse riding boots were designed keeping various aspects of horse riding in mind.

Traditional horse riding boots had certain characteristics that ensured safety. High heels, typical of most cowboy style horse riding boots, help in holding the foot in the stirrup. Heels prevent the foot from slipping and therefore ensure that the rider stays in the saddle. The pointed toe of horse riding boots ensures that they can be inserted in the stirrup with ease. Almost knee high, the traditional horse riding boots also ensured that the rider’s legs were not pinched or chaffed due to the saddle. These were almost always made from cowhide though more exotic hides like elk, alligator, snake, ostrich and elephant are being used now. The tall shaft of the horse riding boots ensured that the boots were held in place while the loose fitting and absence of lace ensured that the horse riding boots would come off in the event of a fall. It is important that horse riding boots come off easily because, if they do not, the rider can be dragged along with a frenzied horse if he gets unseated for some reason.

Though the design for horse riding boots that is accepted as standard has changed with the heel becoming shorter and rounded and squared toes coming into the market, the basic levels of safety are still kept in mind while manufacturing the various kinds.

The main types of horse riding boots that are considered by horse riders today are field horse riding boots, hunt horse riding boots, dressage horse riding boots and paddock horse riding boots. Each of these has their own characteristics and has adopted some aspects of the traditional horse riding boots.

- Field horse riding boots â?” Field boots are generally used when riding in a short stirrup. They provide a certain amount of slack. Generally laced up to the ankle, field horse riding boots are therefore, ideal for short jumps, fox hunting, show or event jumping and fence work.
- Dressage horse riding boots â?” These boots are used mainly for dressage competitions. They are firmer and stiffer than field boots but can also be used for fox jumping and show jumping.
- Hunt horse riding boots â?” The hunt boots are used mainly for fox hunting. They are similar to dressage horse riding boots but have a cuff at the top.
- Paddock horse riding boots â?” The most common of the horse riding boots, paddock boots are also sometimes known as Jodhpur boots. They are meant for everyday use, are generally ankle high and are used along with half chaps. In most cases, this is the option that is chosen for children since paddock shoes are smaller and cheaper. Sometimes, paddock shoes have additional cushion in the form of toe caps. They also have zippers so that wearing them or taking them off is relatively easier.

The key aspects that you need to keep in mind while horse riding boots are comfort and fit. The horse riding boots that you buy should be made from soft leather and should be padded in the inside. Horse riding boots should also fit snugly. Chose horse riding boots that have an adjustable lace till the ankle so that you can tighten the boots based on how much is comfortable. If you are choosing horse riding boots that have a high shaft, ensure that putting them on or taking them off is easy. You may also need to invest in boot hooks to wear horse riding boots and a boot jack to take them off.

Double H, the quality and price reflect that they are made in the USA
I do not recommend the HD made in China $ 30 at Wal-Mart junk.
Personally, I don’t like a pull-on boot for riding. What pulls on can pull off if snagged.

If you really want a decent boot that’s made in China you have to go to the higher quality (and price) end.

Edit: My laces will never get caught. My boots are always laced inside over out to reduce snags and are kept well tied with no hanging ends. I just don’t like the fit and feel of engineer boots.
I like the feeling of ankle support. When you LIVE in your boots, they do not last 5 years.

Forget both those brands and go with either Red wing lace-ups, and mink oil the hell out of them and they will last longer than the bike.-and they’re worth every penny. Or if cost is a heavy consideration get some lace-up Wolverines and do the same thing.

I was in the store the other day trying on new boots. I feel in love with a pair of double h boots. When i was a kid I was told that slip on’s were dangerous because they could slip out of the stirrup when your riding. My all time favorite boots are my double H lace up’s. whoever told you that tale about slip ons being dangerous was yanking your chain.

Slip ons are what cowboys have been wearing for over a hundred and fifty years!

People told me that the lace ups were dangerous! ha! another tall tale.

I ride unbroke horses, green broke horses and horses who are in retraining for bucking, bolting, etc…. with my trusty Justin Roper slip on boots.

I also ride in Ariats which are like a regular shoe, but not gummy on the bottom, they’re made for riding….but my stirrups are slick and big and they fit the shoes well.

I think slip ons or lace ups are safer than the ariats for other people to ride with.

I have Ariat…something…lace-up paddock boots. They’re very comfortable and last FOREVER, but they’re also really expensive. Mine are really beat up because they were my mom’s old pair, so I decided to turn them into work boots and keep my new pair of paddock boots (also Ariats but a cheaper line) for riding.

There is no right or wrong answer to this question – it is a matter of personal opinion. Double H makes western boots, so I assume you’re asking about the difference between slip on and lace up ropers?

I love Anderson Bean western boots. I have flat feet and find these to be the most comfortable right out of the box.

While I have a pair of Justin crepe sole ropers and a pair of Justin Lacers, I find the lacers do not offer enough flexibility in my heel when I am riding. They are my favorite workbook, though

I have Apache Cream, Mink Oil, Boot Cream (the neutral color polish) and water and stain protectant spray on… but what order do I use these in? help! I don’t want to ruin my new boots! haha.
They are nice lether Mens boots, nicer, not work boots, but not shiny alligator type leather either. Just regular double H brand boots.

If you wear lower heel boots with a wide toe area (like Ropers), then there wouldn’t be a problem. If you wear higher heel boots (which shorten the tendons at the back of your calves) with pointed toes and a narrow toe area (which leads to bunions and hammertoes), then it’s not so good. So, it depends on the style of the boot you’re wearing. Talk to a podiatrist and he’ll tell you the truth!! : /

I will second the above answer and add a few more bits:

In addition to creating a muscle/release issue with higher heels, low cushion soles can be very hard on feet over such long hours. Depending on the factory you work at, slippery floors would be a hazard in the boots you linked, not to mention that without any toe protection, you could be inviting a hazard for your feet/toes.

No, I’m not in Texas. I really don’t see what that has to do with this. I didn’t know you could only wear boots if you lived in Texas, thanks for informing me.

The first boots with the second dress. The first dress is too fancy for boots. The second one is plain so both the dress and the boots will stand out. Color doesnt matter. White goes with all.

Are you in Texas? I would choose the first dress because if you choose the second everyone will speculate about your pregnancy. I personally do not think either pair of boots works especially well.

Finding Plus Size Boots-Arrgh!

Wintertime. Shopping for plus size boots. I remember it well. I was born in western Pennsylvania, and every fall I’d go shopping for plus size snow boots. I live in South Florida now, so my need for boots has been eliminated. But the agony of shopping for boots in my size up north was something I won’t soon forget. No stores had plus size boots!

I’d start out with a vision of what I wanted. Something mid calf or full length. Brown, with zipper, and good soles that would hold me up on ice. That shouldn’t have been hard to find, right?

So I’d visit the local shoe stores, and grit my teeth every time the clerk brought out a new pair of boots. I’d try them on, and they’d fit fine in the foot area, but they wouldn’t zip up! None of them were designed for women with a wide calf. That started to get really embarrassing about the third set of boots brought out. So I’d try another store and then another.

I once had a nice plus size clerk who told me when I walked in and asked for long boots, that I might as well go elsewhere. They didn’t stock them. I asked the lady where she got her plus size boots, and she pointed behind the counter to her short black leather cutie pie boots. Yuck.

I once found a pair of boots that fit me. They fit like a glove. But they were ORANGE.

Several stores and a whole mall later, I’d end up with short black hiking boots. I’d come home with unfashionable boots and a good chunk of my self image in the trash can.

All that’s changed with the internet age. We can go online and find just the plus size boots we need. I’ll be visiting snowland this winter, and I’m going to have to go looking for new boots. I haven’t had to any boots for a couple years now. But at least this time I know that I’ll be able to find exactly what I want, in colors and style I like. Online. And the darn boots will ZIP UP!

If it were between the two, I’d wear the Bates with some nice insoles in them.

I’ve always loved Danners but they are expensive and heavy. It wasn’t until I became a cop a long time ago that I was issued a pair of Magnums which are very lightweight. As a contractor, I wore Magnums and then was issued everything from Oakley, Converse and Merrell’s. From my experience, I’d still enjoy wearing the Magnum and Merrell’s. Being comfortable is the key in the field either performing fieldcraft duties or running.
